The Mormon Church operates the Family History Library in Salt Lake City,
the largest genealogical library in the world, and over 3,500 Family History
Centers worldwide, including 24 in the greater San Francisco Bay area:
The collection includes over three million reels of microfilm, including
thousands of reels of 19th-century East European Jewish vital
records, from Poland,
Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Estonia, Belarus,
and Lithuania.
Microfilm may be borrowed from Salt Lake City for a small fee.
The Family History Library Catalog™ (FHLC), the catalog of the
holdings of the Library in Salt Lake City, can be searched online at www.familysearch.org.

Note: Sunday hours are generally reserved for Mormon researchers.

The Alice Phelan Sullivan Library of the Society of California Pioneers contains over 10,000 books, manuscripts, maps, journals, newspapers, and autobiographical materials related to the early history of California. The Society also has eight volumes of reminiscences of its founding members written at the turn of the century. Scholars may consult some 1,000 manuscript files - which include an extensive collection of overland and ship diaries, the Sherman Music Collection, playbills, scrapbooks and ledgers as well as printed ephemera and pamphlets. The library also houses collections of over 250 newspaper titles, nearly 300 periodical titles and over 3,000 maps. Archival collections include the Cooper-Molera papers on early California, the Patterson Mining Collections, Angel Island, and materials relating to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915.
